My 2014 photography challenge: #Project365 #CatchTheMoment365

This year I really wanted to focus on improving my skills with my DSLR. I’ve had a good camera by my side for years, and I keep just using my iPhone. 90% of Henry’s baby pictures are from an iPhone, which just makes me a bit sad now. They look fine on the phone, or even on Facebook, but they are pretty terrible to print out. I love it’s convenience and ability to really catch the moment when my hands are full, but it’s time to use the real camera.

Mandy surprised me with a beautifully upgraded camera this Christmas. I got to trade in my older Canon Rebel XT for a shiny new Nikon D5300. She even included Nikkor 50mm prime and 55-300mm lens. Seriously beautiful lenses. I’ve gotten a few books, found some online tutorials, and finally got Lightroom set up. Now I just need to make the time to practice and improve. It seemed like committing to a 365 project maybe just the thing. So I committed to two – [icon name=”icon-smile”]

Click it Up a Notch is running a 365 linkup which is a bit of a passive listing and then I found a very interactive group over at Catch the Moment 365. This is hosted by Nurse Loves FarmerBehind the Camera and Dreaming and Simply Stavish.

I plan on posting my photos each day to my 365 Flickr set along with my Instagram account, I’m sure most will also be available on a daily basis over at my Facebook page too. I will be adding the tags #project365 and #catchthemoment365 to all of my posts to try and make them easy to distinguish. Then each Friday I’ll be posting a wrap up of the week with all my photos along with any notes that I feel are worth sharing. I really look forward to working through this challenge. I know somedays it maybe hard to keep up with it, but I’m allowing  myself to use my iPhone as a backup resource. In the end I’d like to see around 80% of my photos from my Nikon. I’d be happy to know I used it almost 300 different days of the year.

Enough with the chitchat, lets see some photos!

This is me. I’m really not that camera shy, but I just started taking photos through the mirror in our bedroom and loved how a couple of these came out.

Short week! Next Friday will be a bit more exciting. Please feel free to follow me throughout the project. I’ve been trying to find everyone participating and adding them to a few of my feeds. Leave a note below if you want to make sure I don’t miss yours.

  1. I just signed up for a 3 hour photography class in hopes of learning more about my camera itself and how to take better photos of our little guy. I’m going to be revisiting your blog in hopes of finding some tips and tricks. No pressure 😉

  2. I did really well with my first little boy and by the time the second one came along, I slacked off. I’m hoping this will get me back in the habit of pulling out the dslr for some better day to day shots of the boys.
